As previously reported, the Chilean Metal Relief is a project lead by Ignacio Orellana, drummer for NY based band DOWNFIRE, who has brought together several metal musicians from Chile and from the international metal community in an effort of solidarity to record some songs aimed at benefiting the victims of this past February 27th earthquake in Chile. All proceedings obtained from these songs will be donated to help the disaster victims rebuild their lives and communities.

In this week's edition of Unearthing the Metal Underground, we'll revisit the country of Chile again - a land with a scene that is so vast and devout that one could do a column on it every week. I respect the Chileans since they are fervent supporters of their metal scene with how they pack their clubs and buy music. In fact, looking at the Chilean scene is observing one with both plenty of new talent and veteran acts just now getting their due.

I have been a music lover since an early age. Originally, I’m from Chile, where I began my love for rock music and drumming by listening to Soda Stereo, G.I.T., Enanitos Verdes, and more. They called it ’Rock Latino’ back then. Around 1987, a friend gave me a cassette with a different kind of music and that was it for me… Kreator ‘Pleasure to Kill’.

New York thrashers PIROSAINT have released a new full-length album, Know Thyself, via Digmetalworld in North America. “This work has taken a lot longer that we have expected but we are more than happy with what we have accomplished,” says drummer Ignacio Orellana. “This band has a long untold history because of its roots but we know that once we have an opportunity to show it live, we will deliver the metal goods. That’s what we are about.”

New York/Chile thrashers Pirosaint have released their new album, Know Thyself, via Digmetalworld. The record took ten years to make, which was recorded between 2013-2016 and 2020-2021 at Oily Sounds Studios NYC by Ignacio Orellana. Orellana is no stranger to the New York City scene as he’s not only known for his musicianship in drumming but is a talented photographer and videographer. You may have seen his works in outlets such as Army of One and Next Mosh. We caught up with the multi talented artist to discuss the return of Pirosaint, the group’s overall challenges, how the internet changed the music industry, and more.
